Rapt Pill Reader

"They who drink beer will think beer — Washington Irving".

Brewing my own beer and mead has been a long-time hobby of mine, but as tech people we are always inclined to monitor and record everything.

Kegland makes a great digital hydrometer called the Rapt Pill. I have been using them for a couple of years, but managed to kill my original one by accidentally short-circuiting the battery.

I recently tried to set up my new replacement Rapt Pill but was frustrated at how bad the new forced app experience is. The pill can send data via Bluetooth or over Wi-Fi, so I thought, why not just read the Bluetooth data from a Raspberry Pi?

This saves me the hassle of using the official mobile app, with the added bonus of having the data locally to process as I see fit.

A basic Python service reads the Bluetooth data sent from the Rapt Pill and saves it to CSV files. A webserver then serves a small HTML site that reads the stored CSV files and plots the data for display.

Source code is available from my code server.
